What is injection foam?
Unlike spray foam insulation that is sprayed into open wall cavities (mostly in new construction), injection foam insulation consists of drilling numerous holes into the existing wall covering of a structure and filling the wall cavity with a low pressure expanding, or pre-expanded foam. This application and installation process can be done from the either the interior or the exterior of the home, although the exterior seems to be the more popular choice.
The holes are then sealed with a plug and painted to match the existing sheathing or facade. If the building has aluminum or vinyl siding, the siding is removed, then re-installed after the installation.

Types of Injection Foam
Several types of foams can be used for wall injection with different advantages and disadvantages, so be sure to discuss which type of foam is best for your residential home or commercial building project:
- Pre-expanded foam insulation (common brands include: Tripolymer, CFi, Retrofoam, and others...)
- Low density pour-in-place polyurethane foam
Pre-Expanded Foam Insulation Advantages Over Polyurethane Foam Insulation
This type of foam insulation is by far the most popular in use today for retrofitting your home or building. It has a great deal of advantages and benefits, including:
Polyurethane Foams, both high density and medium density, expand at a very rapid rate after thet are dispensed into the wall cavity (often 20-200 times their liquid volume). This expansion can often create damage to existing wall sheathing and interior sheetrock, if not carefully and correctly applied. Pre-expanded foam insulation is already at maximum volume when it exits the equipment and only needs to be pumped into the wall cavities, resulting in far less possibility for "blow-out," or damage of the existing wall structures.
